The Register

3 groups

Every preset on the same field, bed, window and kitchen, so you can see the cast come off and the fur stay crisp.

  • The CoatThe fur itself. Texture at real strength, magenta off the chest, red and orange kept apart so a pattern reads.
  • The FaceWhere you look. The nose held from clipping, the catchlight kept, the tag sharp without hardening the neck.
  • The RoomEverything else. Carpet cast cut, dark beds opened, bowls and toys held back so the animal leads.

Animals live in rooms, and rooms tint them. Carpet throws green and yellow up into a coat, a kitchen turns a white dog cream, a dark bed swallows a black cat. Every preset here starts by taking that cast off and then decides how much texture the fur can carry.

The Coat is the fur itself: Paw Print and Tail Curl with texture high and contrast firm so a strand holds, Fur Ruff with magenta pulled back off thick chest hair, Muzzle Fleck keeping red and orange apart so a mottled pattern reads, Claw Sheath and Ear Tuft for the fine edges. The Face is where you look: Nose Leather holds the wet dark part from clipping, Eye Catch keeps the catchlight, Collar Tag sharpens the engraving without hardening the neck.

The Room is everything else. Whisker Line cuts the carpet cast. Cat Basket and Bed Cushion lift the toe so a dark animal in a dark place is not a silhouette. Feed Bowl and Toy Rope hold the saturation down so a plastic bowl or a bright toy does not lead the picture. Rug Corner closes the corners so the pattern stops competing with the animal.

Apply one, then look at the eye. If it is still the animal you know, the preset did its job.

Why I Make These

I am Netzah Elad Topaz. I take photographs and I build software, and the two keep leading me back to the same problem. You were there. The light was doing something you will not see again. Then the photo comes back flat, and it is not what you were looking at.

Closing that gap is the whole job. Every preset here is built from Adobe defaults by hand, with a written note for what it should do to a picture, and it is judged on real photographs before it ships. Nothing is a filter dropped on top of your work.

What I want is simple. You open a photo you almost gave up on, you tap once, and there it is: the day you remember, not the file your camera handed you. That is worth doing properly.

Questions, answered

Black dog, white dog, same preset?

Mostly, yes. The cast removal is the same; what differs is the tonal end. Dog Blanket anchors the blacks so a light coat separates from dark cloth, and Bed Cushion lifts the toe so a dark coat keeps its shape. Try the one for the coat you have.

Do these work in the free Lightroom app?

Yes. Import the .xmp files in the free Lightroom app on iPhone or Android, no subscription needed. They also work in Lightroom Classic and Lightroom on desktop.

What exactly do I get?

All 18 presets from Pet Portrait as .xmp files in an instant ZIP download. The link also lands in your email, and the purchase stays in your account so you can re-download any time.

How do I install them?

Two minutes: unzip, then import inside Lightroom. The step-by-step guide covers iPhone, Android, and desktop.

Can I use them for client work?

Yes. The single-user license covers personal and commercial photography. The one thing you can't do is share or resell the preset files themselves.

Can I tweak a preset after applying it?

Always. A preset is a starting point; every slider stays yours to adjust.
